Recent Funding Successes 2011: 3 IRCSET PhD Scholarships awarded to members of Sci-Sym in 2011 (for projects supervised by Markus Helfert, Ray Walshe and Mark Humphrys). 2011: Sci-Sym members Dr. Patrick Bradley and James Murphy have been awarded IRCSET Postdoctoral Research Fellowships commencing in autumn 2011. 2010/11: Dung Trinh a postgraduate student in the RF modelling and simulation group was awarded a Daniel O'Hare Research scholarship from DCU. Oct. 2010: Sci-Sym obtained UDRC recurrent support funding for 3rd consecutive year from OVPR. Times are hard and funding levels are reduced, but Director and members acknowledge, with thanks, the support provided. Dr. J. Murphy's work on the Annual Report directly contributed to this success and is also warmly acknowledged. July 2010: Heather Ruskin was awarded funding under Engineering & Computing Faculty Research Capacity Building Fund for an M.Sc. student - to be supervised jointly with Sci-Sym FSH colleague, Dr. Mary O'Connell. Anticipated start date Oct. 2010. June 2010: commencing Oct. 2010. Heather Ruskin and Dimitri Perrin awarded ERA-Net Complexity funding with Partners, Prof. Jaak Vilo, BIIT, Univ. of Tartu, Estonia and Prof. Manel Esteller, Dr. D. Huertas, IDIBELL, (Bellvitge Biomedical Research Inst.), Univ. of Barcelona, Spain to investigate: Complexity of Interdependent Epigenetic Signals in Cancer Initiation (CIESCI) - link to web page for project.
Current funding Researchers in Sci-Sym are currently being funded by several organisations: The Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) offer scholarships for both Postgraduate and Postdoctoral researchers, in and outside of the EU. They organise two application calls per year for Postgraduate scholarships, and one for Postdoctoral grants. Starting from 2010, the call for the Enterprise Partnership Scheme, awarding private enterprise co-funded scholarships, has been separated from the Embark Scheme call, and is ongoing all year round. For more information, please see the IRCSET website. Information for the first call for the Embark Scholarship Scheme 2010 is now available on the IRCSET website. Please note the second call will NOT run this year! Important dates: 10 Feb 2010 - application deadline for students. 24 Feb 2010 - application deadline for supervisors and referees.
Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) offers a wide variety of grants and awards, listed on their website. Enterprise Ireland (EI) provides several grants for third level researchers. These include both long term scholarships and short term prizes (e.g. COST, programme offering support for European research networking). They encourage enterprise partnerships and commercialisation of research. More information can be found on their website. Next collection date for COST: 26 March 2010
Dublin City University offers internal funding to both postgraduates and postdoctoral researchers. These include a Career Start Programme for postdoctoral researchers and awards for existing postgraduate students (Travel Awards and President's Research Awards). Other funding opportunities Several other funding opportunities in Ireland and European Union exist, some of which are listed below. Erasmus programme supports short term mobility actions and exchanges between European Universities. Contact the ERASMUS office of your higher education institute for information on availability and application procedure.
Higher Education Authority (HEA) offers funding for third level institutions in Ireland. Additionally, individual financial support is provided through the Access programme. Health Research Board (HRB) provide funding for researchers working on health-related projects. Currently open calls: National Cancer Institute Summer Curriculum in Cancer Prevention - Deadline: 12 Feb 2010 Seventh EU Framework Programme (FP7) is an European Union tool for offering support to research in a variety of fields.
